Health & Wellbeing

Sporting Memories:

We’ve been running our Sporting Memories programme for over a decade now. The original intention for the programme is to use reminiscence as a tool for supporting people with dementia, but as our sessions have evolved, the groups have become more about peer support providing social and emotional wellbeing for older people within our community.

Some of our participants are fans, but being interested in football is not essential, the session activities vary from organised conversations, to guest speakers, to quizzes, to excursions to local visitor attractions such as York Chocolate Story or City Cruises, to lunches at Millers Fish and Chip shop in Haxby.

The programme aims to address potential loneliness and isolation, and became a lifeline for many during the Pandemic, and continues to be a huge part of the participants lives with the group feeling like extended family.

Sessions run twice a week throughout the year: LNER Community Stadium, 10:30am-12pm Fridays and Wigginton Old School, 1-2.30pm Mondays. Newcomers are always welcome and will be asked to register at their first session.

Coaches facilitate fun and engaging sessions, the pace of which is designed around the needs of the participants which allow participants the opportunity to switch off during this time and let the activity take over, and the social side allows the sense of involvement in a group, social interaction with like minded individuals and a chance to be themselves.

Thursday evenings, from 8-9pm, at the LNER Community Stadium mini pitches. Registration is required including details of mental health diagnosis and concerns.
